Incident Details:
On January 26, 2025, a devastating airstrike targeted the South Hospital in Al-Fasher, North Darfur, resulting in the tragic loss of at least 70 civilian lives and injuring many more. This hospital was one of the last remaining functional medical facilities in the region, providing critical care to thousands of displaced individuals and those injured in the ongoing conflict.
UN Response:
Clementine Nkweta-Salami, the UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator for Sudan, condemned the attack, calling it "a shocking violation of international law and an affront to humanity." She emphasized that medical facilities are protected under international humanitarian law and that such attacks constitute war crimes.
Humanitarian Impact:
The airstrike forced the hospital to shut down, leaving thousands without essential medical care.
Doctors, nurses, and patients were among the casualties.
The destruction of healthcare facilities in Darfur has led to an unprecedented health crisis, with rapidly increasing outbreaks of cholera, malnutrition, and untreated injuries.
