ABOUT
BASMATIE

Basmatie VZW is more than just a humanitarian organization—it is a movement built on unity, resilience, and the unwavering belief that change begins with those who dare to take action.

HISTORY

&

Officially founded in Ghent, Belgium, on October 30, 2024, Basmatie’s roots go back much further. It began as a Sudanese community in Ghent, where families came together to preserve their culture, educate their children, and build a strong support system in a new country.

Founded by Mohamed Karar, Hisham Elkheir and Samia A.Izadin one of the community’s pioneers, the initiative first took shape through weekend Arabic and Islamic lessons, cultural gatherings, and youth-led activities that strengthened the bonds between generations.

As we, the children of this community, grew up, so did our vision. What began as a local initiative evolved into a mission-driven organization that responded to humanitarian crises in Sudan and beyond. The 2019 Sudanese Revolution was a turning point—Basmatie and its youth played a crucial role in raising awareness, organizing marches, and mobilizing support in Belgium. As Sudan faced political upheaval, humanitarian disasters and later the devastating outbreak of war, Basmatie expanded its efforts from cultural events to direct humanitarian aid.

Basmatie’s first major humanitarian action was in 2018, a charity drive for children battling cancer in Sudan. The community came together not just to collect donations but to actively prepare and package clothing, medical supplies, and personalized drawings for the children in need. This hands-on approach became the foundation of Basmatie’s philosophy—not just giving, but actively engaging in the process of helping.

When war broke out in Sudan, Basmatie shifted its focus toward emergency relief efforts, organizing large-scale fundraising events, medical supply collections, and collaborations with pharmacists, doctors, and NGOs in Belgium, the Netherlands and beyond. With every project, Basmatie reinforced its commitment to being a youth-led movement, where young people take the lead in humanitarian work, inspired by the belief that they have the power to leave a lasting mark on the world—just like the meaning of the name "Basmatie" in Arabic:  My Fingerprint.

MISSION.

Our mission extends beyond charity—we strive to create sustainable change by equipping individuals with the skills, knowledge, and opportunities to rebuild their lives.

True impact is not just about providing aid but fostering education, empowerment, and self-reliance. Through training programs, skill-building workshops, cultural exchanges, and hands-on humanitarian work, we equip individuals with the tools they need to thrive—not just survive.

Looking ahead, we are working toward training our young volunteers and sending them into the field, ensuring that our impact extends beyond Belgium and into the heart of the crisis in Sudan.

By focusing on the youth and the next generation, we ensure that the Basmatie mindset endures, bringing fresh ideas and innovative ways to give back to the community and society.

Our ultimate mission is to bridge communities and borders, raise awareness, and create a global network of solidarity that extends far beyond Sudan and Belgium. At its core, Basmatie Vzw stands for action, impact, and legacy—not for recognition, but for those who need it most and for our future.

This is our mission. This is our story. And this is just the beginning.

WAR CHALLENGES.
